Out of Order Causes Confusion

Article Outline

After my editorial, “Out of the opioid fog: A personal perspective” (Willens 2006, Willens 2006) was published in the September issue, I promptly received e-mails from Chris Pasero and Margo McCaffery. They objected to what I thought was reflecting on my own experience when I wrote “how do people with chronic pain function and do they drive under the influence of opioids?” Chris and Margo felt that I may possibly be misleading the readers and that I should have reviewed the literature.

Chris and Margo have long championed for improved pain management and have much more experience than I do how readers may take what is in an editorial as fact. I asked them if they wanted to write a letter to the editor expressing their concerns and we could use that as a means of correcting any misconceptions. I tried as hard as I could to have that letter to the editor and was told that it was too late to publish it in the December issue. Therefore my editorial, “Is anyone out there?” (Willens 2006, Willens 2006), was not completely understood. Chris and Margo received many e-mails questioning this. I encourage everyone to read the Letters to the Editor in this issue and hopefully understand the chronology of Chris and Margo’s letter.
